My portraits have been said to have a personal, almost intimate, quality. Perhaps that's because sculpting from life is an intensely personal process. I don't think it's just the careful studying of another person's features because even when working from photos, I become connected to the subject through stories and discussions with their loved ones. Creating a portrait can be emotionally charged and draining. When the artwork leaves the studio, something of me goes with it.
